Catchin’ Crappie to Cure Cancer Tournament rallies in Cadillac

CADILLAC — The summer fishing season kicked off this weekend and one man is using it for his 13th annual crappie tournament to raise money to defeat cancer.

Allen Retlewski started the Catchin’ Crappie to Cure Cancer Tournament after two of his friends died from cancer, but he had been toying with the idea since his wife was diagnosed.

For many years now, the Kenwood Heritage Park in Cadillac has been home to the Tournament.

And they are still taking registrations, despite the current weather.

“Well, we’ve we registering here at the pavilion at Kenwood Park at 6 a.m. in the morning,” Allen said. “I‘m trying, trying to be here by 5:30. I understand last night’s weather report is somewhere around 5:00. There’s supposed to be a storm coming through here, so I’m hoping it gets in and out for too long.”

Those 16 and younger can fish without the $10 entrance fee, and all proceeds go into cancer research
