KINROSS — Chippewa County International Airport in the Eastern Upper Peninsula welcomed a new seasonal airline service Thursday afternoon.
The first United Airlines flight from Chicago O’Hare arrived in Kinross with 17 people on board.
About the same number of passengers departed on the flight back to O’Hare about an hour later.
The last time there was service from Chicago to Kinross was back in the early 1990’s.
Now, United will have daily service to and from Chicago O’Hare, the third major hub servicing Chippewa Co. International airport
This is in addition to Delta Airlines providing flights to and from Detroit and Minneapolis.
“There was a lot of interest in the area from Chicago but it was difficult to get here. They had to go to Minneapolis to here or Detroit to here so this direct flight is going to boost this area through tourism also with some of our business travelers,” said Airport Manager Tami Beseau
The service will end in the fall, but Beseau hopes United will eventually provide year-round flights.
