Local law enforcement honor those fallen at annual Police Memorial

TRAVERSE CITY — May 11th-17th is National Police Week; a time to recognize those in law enforcement.

A memorial was held May 15th in Traverse City to honor those that have given their lives in the line of duty.

The ceremony brought together the Grand Traverse, Benzie, and the Leelanau County Sheriffs Offices; and the Michigan State Police with rifle salutes and taps in remembrance.

Loved ones also gathered to show their support. Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea says seeing the support from the community is what makes the job worth doing.

“It’s overwhelming and it’s very heartwarming,” says Shea. “And it makes the days that we have that are as miserable as they can be sometimes worth it. We’re not perfect, neither are they. We will make mistakes. But please know we are doing the best we can. And when you see someone in uniform, you just say thank you. to those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice we will never forget.”
