OCEANA COUNTY — A fatal crash occurred on Friday, May 9, in Oceana County involving a car and a bicyclist.
According toa May 12 news release from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at 9:42 p.m. May 9 on E. M-20 near S. 176th Ave. in Newfield Township, Oceana County between a Chevy Pickup Truck and a bicyclist.
The bicyclist, identified as 57-year-old Aaron Andreas from Hesperia, was found by deputies in a ditch, where medical responders attempted aid but were unsuccessful.
The driver of the 2015 Chevy Pickup, a 42-year-old man from Hesperia, stated he was traveling westbound on M-20 when the crash occurred.
Due to the darkness, the driver initially thought he had hit a deer and stopped to investigate, discovering the bicycle and rider along the road.
The driver then contacted a nearby residence to call 911.
Drugs, alcohol, and speed are not believed to be factors in the accident.
The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
Assistance at the scene was provided by Oceana Life EMS, Ferry Fire/Rescue and Mason County Sheriff’s Accident Investigators.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities urge the community to keep the victim and his family in their thoughts.
