For half a century at Kingsley Elementary School, a special Mother’s Day tradition continues. Third-grade students create wooden hearts, a project the current teacher, Ms. Dunham, also participated in as a child.
Middle or high school shop students cut the hearts, and then the younger students sand and stain them. Each heart is paired with a heartfelt poem written by the student. This allows kids to create a truly personal gift for their mothers, grandmothers, or other special people in their lives.
The students enjoy the hands-on process of sanding and staining. The tradition is a meaningful experience for both the children creating the gifts and the recipients. Many mothers cherish these handmade hearts as lasting keepsakes.
The project also connects different grade levels, with older students crafting the base for the younger students’ creations. This heartwarming tradition at Kingsley Elementary School offers a special, student-made “thinking of you” for moms.
