SAULT STE. MARIE — What started out as a dream in 2016 is closer to becoming a reality. The Soo Locks Children’s Museum is only months away from opening.
Wednesday evening, the museum held it’s ‘construction kick-off’ to show how progress is going.
Construction on the inside of the building officially started last week. It’s been a long process to get to this point in the project.
The Covid-19 Pandemic slowed fundraising efforts and the cost of construction materials have gone up the past few years.
The museum will let children explore, create, celebrate, and learn about local history.
The $2 million project has been funded by grants, community fundraising and donations.
“This is our way of saying, look, it’s really happening. We want to thank you for everything you have done for us, for believing in us, for believing in the community and the children in our community so it’s small, but it’s definitely a big thank you to them,” said Raquel Fernandez-Earns, President & SLCM Board Director
The museum expects to open in winter of this year at its Portage Avenue location near the Soo Locks.
