Ferris State University encourages students to unplug

BIG RAPIDS — Ferris State University invited students to “unplug” today with a new initiative launched by President Bill Pink.

The initiative focused on encouraging face-to-face interaction, as Pink said he always sees Bulldogs with their faces in their phones.

As part of the initiative, from 1-4 p.m. today, Pink’s office teamed up with Student Government and the Center for Student Engagement to hand out free ice cream to students.

They walked around campus, handing out Starbucks gift cards to students they saw engaging with others.

However, due to the number of students that showed up, they ran out of ice cream and gift cards by 2 p.m.

“So aside from giving away all the things that we said we give away, to just walk around campus and see so many students who aren’t so wrapped up in their headphones or their earbuds, it’s been so refreshing to see that success,” Pink said.

Pink said that this may become something the college does regularly on the campus.
