Traverse City Police to seek approval to buy mobile downtown surveillance camera

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Police Department wants a mobile video surveillance camera dedicated to the downtown district. According to the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority, Chief Matt Richmond will be asking them to team up with TCPD to buy the system.

According to the DDA, the police department wants the system to be used at downtown events or in areas that have problems with graffiti and “other nuisances.”

TCPD first brought this proposal to the DDA in July 2024, but there were questions about privacy, costs for installation and maintenance, as well as the type of technology, the storage of management of the data collected. The DDA also wanted to know if the system could be compatible with cameras at private businesses.

At a meeting Friday morning (4/25), Richmond will update the board about efforts to improve public safety and talk about the possible collaboration with the DDA on the mobile surveillance system.

The DDA said it has already allocated $112,480 for the possible installation of a the mobile system, but TCPD says it should cost no more than $40,250.

This item will be discussed at the DDA’s meeting Friday, April 25, 2025 at 9 a.m. in the City Commission Chambers on the 2nd floor of the Governmental Center, 400 Boardman Avenue, Traverse City.
