St. Mary’s Catholic School remembers Pope Francis

SAULT ST. MARIE — With the passing of Pope Francis, catholic schools across the state remembered the pontiff in many ways.

In Sault Ste. Marie Oon April 22, at St. Mary’s Pre-K through eighth catholic school, students learned about the process of how the Vatican now chooses a new pope.

Students in Beth Walsh’s kindergarten class took time out to color a memorial picture of Pope Francis.

With such young students, discussing death is a delicate subject. However, with the pope dying around the easter holiday, Walsh said it was a little easier to do.

“We spent, of course, all last week and the week before leading up to Lent about holy week and what that means and about how Jesus died,” Walsh said. “That is kind of on their minds anyway, death and resurrection. So, this probably just all ties in quite nicely actually.”

The school will have a celebration when a new pope is chosen.
