TRAVERSE CITY —A new wave of scams is targeting independent authors.
Mission Point Press is a publishing company in Traverse City and they’re warning about emails from people claiming to be booksellers; even ones as big as Barnes & Noble.
The emails will typically request bulk orders from authors and send personal and payment information. Brilliant Books in downtown Traverse City says they’re no strangers to book scams that target their company.
“We have an issue where a company called Brilliant Books Literary, sort of uses us as cover to give themselves some legitimacy,” says Brilliant Books Owner Peter Makin. “And they claim to do what Mission Point Press does here, except Mission Point Press really does present the book and you actually have a finished copy. These folks just take your money and give you a new book, and we get the complaints for that.”
Mission Point Press says to watch out for generic emails, poorly written message and any request for suspicious payment methods.
