TRAVERSE CITY — The City Commission in Traverse City will be discussing the hot-button topic of short-term rentals during a study session on Monday, April 14.
City Commissioner Jackie Anderson will present a proposal for forming an ad-hoc committee to discuss the regulation of short-term rentals.
Anderson said that more than 100 new licenses for short-term rentals were issued in 2024, bringing the total to 539. Anderson said this puts further pressure on the supply of long-term housing.
Anderson wants to discuss existing short rental trends and policies, solutions other communities have used to balance short-term and long-term housing needs, and potential revenue streams to support incremental infrastructure and public safety required by short-term rental owners and renters. She would like the city commission to take action on forming the ad-hoc committee at their May 5 meeting.
The city commission will also hear a presentation by Traverse Connect on providing economic development services to the city.
The study session is happening at 7 p.m. on Monday April 14, in the Traverse City Commission Chambers on the second floor of the Governmental Center, 400 Boardman Avenue.
