Bellaire woman causes head-on crash on US-131, 5-year-old in critical condition

KALKASKA COUNTY — A two-vehicle head-on crash occurred on US-131 near the intersection of Day Rd.

According to a March 24 news release from the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 3:25 PM on March 23, a 19-year-old Bellaire woman driving a small SUV northbound abruptly passed a vehicle stopped to turn left and struck a southbound small SUV driven by a 36-year-old Grand Rapids man.

Sheriff Pat Whiteford reported that the two-vehicle head-on crash occurred on US-131 near the intersection of Day Rd. A small SUV driven by the Bellaire female traveling northbound on US-131 abruptly passed a vehicle stopped to turn left onto Day Road, when it struck another small SUV driven by the Grand Rapids man who was traveling southbound on US-131.

Rescue crews from Kalkaska Twp, Clearwater Township, and CETA Fire Departments responded along with Michigan State Police Gaylord Post and Kalkaska Sheriff’s Office personnel.

All occupants were transported by Kalkaska and Frederic Twp EMS to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with serious injuries.

The five-year-old and seven-year-old passengers of the southbound SUV were then transported to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The five-year-old is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
