Man accused of bomb threat against 9&10 News to undergo competency exam

CADILLAC — A man accused of making a bomb threat against 9&10 News could seek an insanity defense for the incident that evacuated the Cadillac building early morning Jan. 17.

David Chisea, 64, of Lake was arrested and arraigned on one count of a false report of a bomb/harmful device, a 4-year felony if convicted.

After a delay for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 25, Chisea was back in Wexford County 84th District Court today, where defense attorney William Barnett discussed the insanity defense for his client. After a brief discussion, the court granted what precedes such a plea, a competency exam and criminal responsibility exam. Wexford County Prosecutor Johanna Carey said that process could take months.

Chisea posted bond and the conditions of his release will continue, including no contact with employees or properties of 9&10 News.

On Jan. 17, Onstar reported Chisea was on the 9&10 property, claiming he had a bomb. Entrances to the station were blocked off while the property was searched. No explosive device was found and he was arrested without incident. Multiple agencies were on scene, including the Wexford County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Wexford County Emergency Management and the Cadillac Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.
