Manistee County teacher arrested for child abuse, detectives say

MANISTEE — On January 10, detectives from the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation into the potential abuse of a child at the Jefferson Elementary School in Manistee.

According to a March 11 news release, the parents of the victim advised detectives that their child told them they were assaulted by their teacher.

During the investigation, detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage of the incident. After completing the investigation, a report was sent to the Manistee County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

After reviewing the report, the Manistee County Prosecutor’s Office authorized an arrest warrant for the teacher, a 34-year-old Manistee woman, for one count of 4th degree child abuse.

The teacher appeared at the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office and posted the $2,500 bond. The name of the teacher is not being released at this time pending arraignment.

“The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office works closely with our schools around the county to ensure we are always putting the safety of our children first,” Sheriff Brian Gutowski said.
