Gunfire exchange in Mancelona Township results in crash and attempted murder charges

MANCELONA — At 4 p.m. Friday, March 7, the Antrim County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-vehicle traffic crash near the intersection of Doerr Road and Conrad Road in Mancelona Township.

During the crash investigation it was discovered that the vehicle had been struck by gunfire. The car was occupied by three males from Kalkaska, Buckley and Grand Rapids. They had been to a home on Doerr Road where an exchange of gunfire, with two of the occupants of the home, caused them to leave and crash the vehicle shortly after.

Two handguns were seized from the vehicle, one of which had been reported as being stolen. No one was injured in the incident. The Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Emergency Response Team was requested at the scene of the shooting and a search warrant was executed on the home. 12 firearms and over 400 rounds of ammunition were seized from the home.

The names of the arrested males are being withheld pending arraignment.

The following charges have been requested from the Sheriff’s Office.

Male No. 1 charged with:

  • 2 counts of Aiding and Abetting
  • 2 counts of Possession of a short-barreled shotgun/rifle
  • Resisting and Obstructing Police

Male No. 2 charged with:

  • 3 counts of Attempted 2nd degree murder
  • 3 counts of Assault with intent to murder
  • Possession of short barreled shotgun/rifle
  • Possession of a firearm during he commission of a felony
  • Conspiracy to purchase an illegal/stolen firearm
  • Carrying of a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent

Male No. 3 charged with:

  • 3 counts of Attempted 2nd degree murder
  • 3 counts of Assault with intent to murder
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Conspiracy to purchase an illegal/stolen firearm
  • Carry dangerous weapon with unlawful intent
  • Felon in possession of a firearm
  • Lying to a police officer

Male No. 4 charged with:

  • 2 counts of assault with intent to murder
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Conspiracy to sell an illegal/stolen firearm
  • Carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent
  • Receiving and concealing stolen firearm
  • Discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle
  • Carrying a concealed firearm
  • Brandishing a firearm in public

The Antrim County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Mancelona Police Department, Michigan State Police and the Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Emergency Response Team.
