Deadline for Real I.D. swiftly approaching

The long-awaited Real I.D. is now two months away from going into effect at airports throughout the country.

It’s been a long time coming as lawmakers originally wanted the Real I.D. to go into effect in 2008.

After multiple setbacks the wait is almost over.

It cannot be used to replace passports that are required for international flights.

Children under 18 will not be required to have a Real I.D. they can use birth certificates instead.

Adults who don’t have a real I.D will be allowed to use a passport instead.

Traverse City travel agent Abigail Schimke details how people in Michigan can get the newly required I.D.

“If you’re going in to get your diverse license renewed anyway, you just tell them I need to update it to the Real I.D, they’ll take care of it for you,” said Schimke. “And you bring in the required documents needed to get the Real I.D, you know, proof of citizenship, residency, things like that.”

Starting May 7th, you will need a Real I.D. or a passport to board domestic flights.
