Tightlines for Troops is making another call for help, this after their last request for more veterans to sign up, resulted in a big response.
Board member Craig Kent said the nonprofit is now looking for some more boats to take the record number of veterans that have recently signed up, for their annual fishing tournament that’s happening May 16-17.
The only requirements are that the boats have to be 25 feet in length and have the proper gear to fish on Lake Michigan for Trout and Salmon.
They said they were more successful getting the word out and have doubled the number of participants, within a week.
Kent said they have 640 veterans signed up. That’s the most they’ve ever had in the 15 years of doing the event.
“It certainly makes us want to keep on going. If there are that many people that still want to come enjoy a day fishing and meeting other veterans, it’s well worth doing. Over half of those people that I put in this year are new people that have never attended before. So, we have obviously reached a bunch of new veterans,” said Kent.
Kent said there’s no deadline if you’d like to help out but the sooner, the better for planning purposes.
Tightlines for Troops has been running the event since 2010.
They have taken more than 3,500 veterans fishing in that time.
