Love INC. offering cook classes to make the most of donated food staples

A Northern Michigan nonprofit is hoping to help people in need make the most of items they might pick up at pantries and other food distribution sites, with the help of a grant.

Love INC in Cadillac, which serves Wexford, Missaukee, and Osceola counties, said they recently received a $10,000 grant from the Cadillac Community Foundation to offer cooking classes.

Executive Director Rachel Reinink said the grant covers the costs of supplying eight portable cooking stations so they can help educate people.

The nonprofit says they opened an emergency pantry on site several months ago and noticed that a lot of the people who received food, didn’t know what to do with the items they received.

“Oftentimes, people will receive big bags of rice, big bags of dried beans or canned goods, like a can of peas or a can of corn or, you know, all these things that by themselves, people don’t necessarily know what to do with them. So, our goal is to be able to create food items, nutritious meals out of these things that they would receive, that they wouldn’t normally know what to do with,” said Reinink.

Love INC just had their first of four classes recently and plan to hold 3 more sessions for this year.
