ALPENA — The Special Olympics Michigan Law Enforcement Polar Plunge in Alpena County aims to raise funds for athletes and support their participation in events.

The Alpena Polar Plunge will take place in downtown Alpena at the intersection of Second Avenue and Water Street at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025.

The participants dress up in costume and prepare to plunge into the frigid waters for a good cause. The money raised supports local Special Olympic athletes traveling to all the athletic events.

“We hope to get a great turnout this year to support our athletes from northern Michigan. The statewide Polar Plunge events help raise funds for nearly 21,000 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan,” Michigan State Police Trooper Jason Kunath said.

Special Olympics Michigan is a year-round program offering sports for those with intellectual disabilities. Although sports are the “vehicle,” the goal of the Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate and receive respect as members of their communities.
