BENZIE COUNTY - A Northern Michigan park is getting some upgrades thanks to a grant from the state.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is doling out a $150,000 Recreation Passport grant to Benzie County’s Homestead Township for a multi-use pavilion with related amenities for the Platte River Park.
Ingemar Johansson with the Honor Area Restoration Project, or HARP, said the new park pavilion will be made of wood with a metal roof and will be placed near the Indian Hill entrance of the park.
Johansson said the 52-acre Platte River Park had a grand opening last summer, showcasing a new angler path, a fishing platform and a universally accessible kayak-canoe launch.
“The next step for us after this pavilion is done is to create access from the village to here so that it be a walking and biking and skiing and what have you. The people can actually walk from the Village of Honor into the park,” said Johansson.
The pavilion will be built this spring.
