Local firefighters give tips to prevent Christmas tree fires

CADILLAC--The season of Christmas lights is in full swing, but they do pose an occasional hazard if not used properly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association Christmas tree lights account for 770 fires a year.

Those lights pose significant dangers when used improperly and not replaced regularly.

By now, your tree is likely already up; but it’s not too late to review its safety.

If you rigged your lights to get them working again, consider buying new ones.

Replace broken and missing bulbs, they can lead to electrocution and other injuries.

If you’re using multiple strings of lights, be weary of plugging them into the same outlet with extension cords.

The type of lights on your tree can make a significant difference too.

When you get a new real Christmas tree, they need to be kept watered,” said LT. firefighter Justin Todd. “If you have your older traditional lights instead of LED lights, they tend to burn hotter, and if your tree isn’t watered well enough that dries the tree out and the lights get too hot. That’s what ignites the branches.

Lieutenant Todd also says giving lights a break is a good idea.

Leaving them running 24/7 can cause them to become hot to the touch and lead to overheating.
