SAULT STE. MARIE — Volunteers braved the frigid temperatures in the teens and wind chills around zero Thursday afternoon to help distribute food in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Feeding America mobile food pantry program provides thousands of pounds of protein, dairy, grains and other food items every month at Big Bear Arena. Hundreds of people lined up in their vehicles for volunteers to load up the items from 4 to 6 p.m.
Under Kristen Corbiere’s leadership, the mobile food pantry and its volunteers have distributed over 940,500 pounds of food to nearly 39,000 individuals. Now Kristin said it’s time to pass the torch.
“I am just one individual. Without all of our volunteers and our supporters, not just our volunteers who come here every month, that help me with my family and friends who have supported me through this and my watched my kids or when I needed that extra push,” said Kristin Corbiere, volunteer coordinator.
Sault Tribe chairman Austin Lowes will temporarily take over the position for next month’s event.
