With colder temperatures moving in, local heath departments are issuing a warning that Narcan can freeze.
Narcan is a drug used to reverse the effects of opioids and reduce the risk of overdose. If it is stored outside or in a car, there’s a possibility of the life saving drug to freeze and unable to work.
Health Department District #10 urges the public to be proactive and not allow it to freeze. When inside storage is not availably, using hand warmers or being held against the body is a good way to keep it warm enough. They also say not to wait for Narcan to thaw during an emergency and to call 911 immediately.
“It’s a great tool to have because anytime you’re in the community, whether it be the grocery store or the movies, at an event, at a school function, anytime there’s a group of people, the potential is there for some for someone to overdose. And anybody that has it then is is available to help potentially save that person’s life,” said Angie, community health coordinator.
Narcan will thaw out and be ready to use after 15 minutes at room temperature. But, again, if you’re in and emergency situation don’t wait, call 911 immediately.
