TRAVERSE CITY - Permit applications are now available for bow hunting on land in Traverse City.
Hickory Forest Natural Area in Garfield Township is 76 acres, and hunting will be introduced to the area to reduce vegetation loss in one of the few remaining wooded areas near the heart of the city.
There will be a limited amount of licenses given out, with two hunters per week for the remainder of the bow hunting season. Those licenses are on a first-come, first-served basis, and the land will be shared with other members of the public.
“In our area, people are pretty used to sharing the land with hunters. In the fall, it’s a big activity, in our region. And so if you’re a hiker, biker or a you’re, you’re kind of used to that on a lot of different public lands. This is the first recreational authority owned park land that’s offering hunting as an activity. So it’s a learning experience for us, but we’re excited about it. And I think it’s a great thing to try out,” explains Matt Cowall, TC and Garfield Twp. Recreational Authority.
The bow hunting season lasts until Jan. 1, and this year is already booked for hunting in this area, but you can still be put on a waitlist for any openings in the future.
