Winter weather is definitely here, and 9&10 News has some tips for staying safe. Check out the links below, or read the tips, and be sure to visit our Weather page for the latest on the snow and temperatures.
- Write down these important phone numbers before the storm hits
- How you can stay prepared in times of severe weather
- How to use a generator (safely) during winter power outages
Here are some tips from Liz Reimink, former emergency management director for Mason County, that we originally ran in December 2022.
- Make sure you have enough food, including items you can easily prepare.
- Make sure you have extra blankets in case of a power outage. If you already have them, know where they are so you can easily find and use them.
- “If you have a generator, make sure that it’s been serviced already this season and you know where you’re going to put it,” said Reimink. “Outside, not in your house, not even in your garage. Have it outside and well ventilated.”
- Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves should be well-maintained before use.
- DO NOT use your stove as an alternative heating source, said Reimink. “Obviously carbon monoxide in an extended power outage is usually our biggest hazard.”
- “Planning ahead, being prepared, if you must travel, do it safely,” said Reimink. “But the best recourse is going to be to ride out the storm at home to make the preparations now.”
