MSP reminds drivers to stop for school buses with Operation Safe Stop

CADILLAC — Michigan State Police troopers from the Cadillac Post are taking part in a statewide initiative, “Operation Safe Stop,” this week.

The goal is to put the brakes on drivers who ignore flashing red lights on stopped buses picking up and dropping off kids.

In one survey from May 2024, school bus drivers reported more than 1,300 incidents where drivers illegally passed them when their lights were on – putting kids’ lives in danger.

“Last year we had a number of tragedies that we heard in the news, and we just do not want that for our kids. The bus should be a safe place. Going to school should be a safe place for them. So let’s try to do our part. And this is one small way that we can keep them safe,” said Sgt. Ashley Miller.

You must stop 20 feet from any bus that has its red lights flashing, and always be alert when driving around school buses.
