Salvation Army says unusable furniture drop-offs cost them hundreds of dollars

CADILLAC — The Cadillac Salvation Army is speaking out after illegal dumping of mattresses and other old furniture is eating into their pocketbook.

Lieutenant Greg Bock with the Salvation Army said they have had several instances of people dropping off unusable mattresses, box springs, and other old furniture that they can’t use at their two locations in Cadillac.

He said every time this happens it costs the nonprofit $225 to dispose of it.

Bock said they do not accept mattresses and box springs because they are bulky and take up a lot of room.

He said he suspects they are not doing it as a donation because of the condition of the furniture and the time of day they are leaving it.

“A lot of this stuff doesn’t show up until the next morning. We’ll leave for the day, and there won’t be anything outside. We’ll come back in the morning and there will be the box springs, the mattresses, the couches, the love seats that are stained there. They’re torn, or they just have a really bad odor to them,” said Bock.

He said he would rather use the limited funds they have to help people in need instead of paying for the removal of old furniture and mattresses that were dumped off at their sites. Bock says if you have any questions about the donations they accept, you can contact them during business hours.
