PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY — A Petoskey builder has been charged with contractor fraud, Michigan State Police said Tuesday.
A trooper from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post was investigating a builder’s fraud complaint in July 2024 when another victim was identified, troopers said.
The victim paid the contractor, 33-year-old Carter Chou Bassett from Petoskey, $76,000 to remodel their home. Bassett never obtained permits or began work on the home, troopers said.
A report was turned over to the Presque Isle Prosecutor’s Office, and an arrest warrant was issued on Sept. 6.
Bassett was arrested and sent to the Presque Isle County Jail on Sept. 9. Bassett was arraigned in the 89th District Court in Presque Isle County on one count of contractor fraudulent use of building funds.
