Young man’s body recovered from drowning in Mecosta Co. lake

UPDATE 9/24/24 4:15 p.m.

MECOSTA COUNTY — The Sheriff’s Office said their Dive Team found the body of 21-year-old Gavin Miller of Rodney around noon on Tuesday.

The search started again early Tuesday morning after it was called off for low visibility. Using several tools including sonar and drones, search teams ultimately located the boat and Miller’s body.

MECOSTA COUNTY — On Monday night around 10 p.m., deputies were sent to Lower Evans Lake in Martiny Township for a possible drowning.

It was reported that two men – both from Rodney – were fishing when their boat capsized. One was able to swim to shore and find help, but deputies said the other is presumed to have drowned.

Emergency first responders attempted to locate the missing man until the search was called off due to visibility issues and darkness. Deputies said the search and recovery will continue Tuesday until the man is located.

Deputies were assisted on scene by Mecosta Co Dive Team and Hover Craft, Fork Twp Fire/Rescue, Barryton Fire/Rescue, Chippewa Fire/Rescue, Morton Twp Fire/Rescue, Big Rapids Twp Fire Drone, Michigan State Police, DNR, Big Rapids PD, Mecosta Co EMS, Mecosta Co Victim Services and Meceola Central Dispatch.
