Alpena man stabbed puppy to death because it bit him, police say

ALPENA - An Alpena man has been charged with killing his 3-month-old dog, police said.

Steven Szymanski, 65, of Alpena was arraigned in the 88th District Court on charges of second-degree killing/torturing an animal, police said. The charges stem from an investigation conducted by the Alpena police department early Wednesday morning.

Officers had contact with Szymanski then and found he had stabbed his dog and dumped the body into a dumpster near his residence, police said. Officers located the dog and noted it had been stabbed multiple times, they said.

Szymanski told officers he was upset with the dog because it had bit him, police said.

Szymanski was immediately arrested and sent to the Alpena County Jail.

The charges against Szymanski carry up to 14 years in prison because he has a habitual offense notice.
