FRANKFORT — A search is underway for a missing boater on Lake Michigan, officials said Thursday.

The boat left Frankfort around 6 a.m., officials said. One man was rescued by a nearby boat, but another man is still missing, officials said.

As we approach Labor Day weekend, it’s important to remember boat safety precautions like making sure you and your passenger know where safety equipment is stored, avoiding alcohol and making note of any dangerous conditions.

“If you aren’t aware of what’s out there, and you go out in the dark before daylight or after sunset, they can be a hazard. So you need to note these things and make sure that a lot of that is accounted for. And again, having an experienced captain is the most important thing,” said John Sarya, co-owner of Jacobson Marina Resort in Frankfort.

A number of agencies are now searching for the missing man, including marine units from the Benzie, Manistee and Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Offices.
