LSSU installs 144 flags throughout Sault Ste. Marie to promote community partnership

SAULT STE. MARIE —144 LSSU flags downtown remind people of the ongoing partnership between Lake Superior State University and the city in Chippewa County.

LSSU’s new president, Dr. David Travis, got the ball rolling by creating the “Campus and Community Partnership Fund” and donating an annual personal gift of $10,000. A portion of that $10,000 was used to purchase the flags and have them installed.

A joint committee of representatives from LSSU and the community will oversee the fund, identifying and recommending future projects.

“It is critical to the health of Sault Ste. Marie. It not only brings the knowledge-based economy here, it’s a good employer and an economic driver. Just to see the kids in the community, it’s so exciting and it makes it so vibrant they come back to school,” said Soo Mayor Don Gerrie.

The flags will come down in October, but they will be re-installed next July.
