Sault Ste. Marie area kids get school supplies through Project Backpack

SAULT STE. MARIE — On Friday, parents got some help getting their kids ready for the upcoming school year.

United Way of the Eastern U.P.’s annual Project Backpack event took place at Lake Superior State University’s Norris Center. 400 backpacks, filled with school supplies and information, were given away to school-aged children.

The event was open to residents of Chippewa County with no proof of income required. In addition to the backpack giveaway, several organizations were onsite to provide information.

One Soo High School junior who volunteers for United Way said her parents took advantage of the program when she was in elementary school.

“I was super excited when my parents brought it back because there were markers, colored pencils, a lot of paper in there too, and like everything you need for school. It kinda gets you excited to go back,” said Autumn Goldberg.

If there are any supplies left over from the event, they will be given to area schools.
