Explore with Eric: The legendary Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse

There is no better way to enjoy a hot summer day than hitting the beach and there are a few beaches in Michigan that contain the history and majesty of Sterns Beach in Mason County. As the waves gently lap onto the shore and the call of a shore bird rings out across the sand, your eyes may be drawn to a structure that seems to rise straight out of Lake Michigan.

You are not imagining things, you are witnessing the Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse, one of the most iconic and photographed structures in Michigan. By following a half-mile manmade peninsula, you can travel out onto the lake to pay this historic, yet functional, lighthouse a visit.

The team behind maintaining this historic lighthouse is the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association, a dedicated group of volunteers that make it their mission to maintain these prized sentinels of the Michigan shoreline.

For more information or to sign up to volunteer visit the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association website.
