White Cloud seeks $28M for district-wide renovations, safety upgrades

White Cloud Public Schools is seeking $28 million for improvements throughout the district, including classroom modernization and safety upgrades.

The proposal would not increase tax rates and would maintain the current rate until 2035.

Superintendent Ed Canning says the proposal would benefit students of all ages, expand educational offerings and upgrade aging facilities.

“We are excited that a large portion of this focuses on safety and security, energy efficiency, and some athletic improvements,” he said. “Very excited about the opportunity that this presents, not only to the school, the staff, but also to the community. We’ve attempted to look at this in a variety of aspects, the best way it can fit the community. And we’re able to provide this opportunity with a no tax increase expected.”

The upgrades would include renovations to all buildings in the district, including the construction of secure entries, remodeled classrooms and replacement of building infrastructure like HVAC.

“Safety and security has been a focus of all districts throughout the country, and we’ve focused a lot of our attention over the past few years on that,” Canning said. “This proposal allows us to kind of take that next step. On top of the things that we’ve already done, improvement in the security cameras, improvement in all the entrances and exits of all buildings.”

The bond would also fund the creation of a lit path connecting the elementary and junior high buildings, which canning says would help foster a sense of community across grades.
