Harris wins support of Michigan Democratic delegates

Michigan Democrats have officially voted to support Vice President Kamala Harris replacing President Biden at the top of the ticket, further consolidating her status as the de facto nominee.

While the breakdown of the vote has not yet been made public, party chair Lavora Barnes announced last night that the delegation had voted overwhelmingly to support Harris.

“Since the day she took office, Vice President Harris has clearly shown her dedication to Michiganders, their values, and their families,” Barnes said in a statement. “As a prosecutor and senator, she worked to keep her community safe from those who sought to harm it — now, as our nominee, she is doing the exact same thing as she fights to beat Donald Trump and his MAGA agenda once again.”

Biden had received 115 of Michigan’s 117 delegates — and while it’s unclear how many have committed to supporting Harris, party members have said the support is widespread.

Chris Cracchiolo, chair of the Grand Traverse Democratic Party and a state delegate, said Harris emerged as the clear frontrunner following Biden’s announcement and endorsement.

“There was a lot of discussion about consideration of other candidates and so forth — you know, should we or should we be giving them the opportunity? And at the end of the day, I think everybody just coalesced around the vice president,” Cracchiolo said.

Cracchiolo added that he predicted enthusiasm from Harris’s likely nomination to help Democrats across the ballot.

The Democratic National Committee is still finalizing the nomination process, but have said it will take place virtually in the first week of August.
