Crafting with the Katies: Making the Viral Foam Popcorn Garland

Merry Christmas! The Katies have one final craft for you this holiday week, so you can add your final touch to your decorations!

They’re making the viral foam popcorn garland, made famous on TikTok.

This project can get messy, and use a lot of hot glue and spray foam, so this craft is not recommended for your little ones.

For this project, you’ll need:

• 24 red shatterproof Christmas bulbs
• Great Stuff Big Gap Filler spray foam
• Hot glue and hot glue gun
• Acetone (for removing spray foam from skin or clothes)
• Gloves
• String
• Straws
• Scissors
• Wax paper
• Large paper clip
• Tarp, or a large space where you can get messy

To make this project, follow these steps:

To make the popcorn:

Step one: Set out your tarp on the surface you’re working on. Grab your wax paper and roll out a large sheet of it. This is where you’re going to be making your popcorn.

Step two: Read the instructions on your can of spray foam. Ours said to shake vigorously for 60 seconds, the attach the nozzle.

Step three: Put on your gloves, and make sure you’re wearing clothes you don’t care about in case things get messy. Spray your foam upside down in a small star pattern. When you’ve done one layer, place a straw in the middle of your foam mound. This will help you later when you’re stringing your garland. Put another foam layer on top of the straw.

Step four: Repeat this process until the can is completely empty. We got about 24 popcorn kernels out of one can.

Step five: Place your popcorn in an area where they can dry and harden. We let ours dry overnight.

To make the cranberries:

Step one: Remove the hook holder at the top of your ornament. Make sure your hot glue gun is plugged in and ready!

Step two: Find the center of the bottom of your bulb, and press the tip of your glue gun into the bottom. You’re making an opening to help string your cranberries in your garland. Do not use any glue at this point.

Step three: Continue pressing a hole into the bottom of your bulbs until you’ve run out.

To string your garland:

Step one: Make sure all your popcorn kernels have dried completely before starting this process.

Step two: Take your straws and pull them out of your popcorn kernels. That way, you still have an opening for your string, but you don’t have your straw sticking out. If your straw is not coming out smoothly, cut as close as your can to the straw’s opening, so you don’t have straw pieces sticking out.

Step three: Take your paper clip and unfold it so it looks like a large crochet hook. This will help you pull your string through your bulb.

Step four: Decide what pattern you’d like your garland to be. We went cranberry-popcorn-cranberry-popcorn, but you can choose whatever design looks best to you!

Step five: Go ahead and string your popcorn and cranberries onto your garland string.

Step six: When you’ve finished stringing your garland, make a few knots at either end of your garland to secure it. If you have your hot glue handy, gluing down the ends of your garland wouldn’t hurt, too!
