Ordering from your favorite Chinese restaurant can be a real treat. But, when it comes to feeding a large family, it may not always be the best option for your budget. Chief photojournalist, Derrick Larr and wife, Shannon bring us a couple of inexpensive dishes to try out instead of going for take out.
Sesame Chicken
- Bag of frozen chicken bits or nuggets
- 8 oz sesame dressing
- 1/2 cup apricot preserves
- 1 oz packet dry onion soup mix
- Sesame seeds
Orange Chicken
- Bag of frozen chicken bits or nuggets
- 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (Derrick loves Sweet Baby Rays)
- 1 cup sweet orange marmalade
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
Depending on which brand of frozen chicken bits or nuggets you have, place them in the oven and cook them according to the brand’s directions.
While your chicken is cooking, combine the ingredients listed above into 2 microwave-safe bowls.
Whisk the ingredients together.
Microwave each bowl at 3-4 minutes. Shannon recommends using a damp paper towel to help the sauce heat evenly, and prevent burning.
Coat chicken with the sauce of your choice. Serve over a bed of rice.
