This week’s Amazing Northern Michigan Home is like taking a step back in time to the early 1900’s.
Whitney Amann and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson take you to Charlevoix to see this modernized antique home.
“Michigan Avenue in Charlevoix has always been a coveted place to have a summer home for generations,” said David Beek, managing broker for Berkshire Hathaway Boyne City. “This home was originally built in 1901, the current owner purchased it in 2008 and did a total period restoration.”
That restoration took this historic home down to the studs and turned it into the updated antique that it is today.
Equipped with all of the modern conveniences with a truly vintage style.
“It took several years to find all of the period replacements, the doors, the hardware and if it was a functional item, she found a reproduction that looks old but works for today’s standards,” said Beek. “The home was also then wired with a home security system, a full sound system in each room, and each room has its own thermostat so that you can control the heat.”
From the doorknobs to the chandeliers, you can find all of those intricate details scattered throughout the nearly 7,000 square foot home.
On the second floor, you will find three en-suite bedrooms, two of which have cozy sleeping porches.
You will also find the enchanting master suite.
“She chose to have a wood burning fireplace what they would have when the home was built,” he said. “There is a dressing room, not a walk in closet but a nice dressing room, where all of the closets are and then the master bath has a slipper soaking tub, a modern shower with body sprays and rain shower head and then an antique vanity with double sink.”
The owner of the home also turned what used to be an attic into a truly magical space.
“The third floor, when the owner purchased it, was basically an attic and she converted it to what we call a loft or a sleeping space and each bed has a trundle bed underneath it, it has its own bathroom and three or four different little nooks for kids to escape away, play games, read books, tell stories,” said Beek. “So I think that’s one of my favorite rooms and of course it has the best view.
You can enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Michigan from any number of rooms in this incredible home or you can take a short walk down the stairs to experience it up close and afterwards…
“There is a beach laundry room so that you can put all of your beach clothes in that laundry,” he said. “There is an outdoor shower so that when you come up from the beach, you can take a shower, put your beach clothes down in that laundry room.”
