LSSU Basketball coach Steve Hettinga speaks with 9&10 about his extension through 2035

SAULT STE. MARIE- Lake Superior State University is making sure their Men’s Basketball coach sticks around for many years.

On Wednesday, the athletic department announced they extended Steve Hettinga’s contract through 2035. The contract solidifies his place as the longest-tenured coach in program history.

Hettinga spoke with 9&10 about the extension:

“With this extension, it allows me to finish a Laker which is something I am proud of being. So, I am very excited about the future and the commitment the school has shown. I love Lake State. I love the community. I love Sault Ste. Marie and what it brings. The people have been great to me and hopefully I have been good to them as well” (Hettinga).

The 55-year-old became the Lakers coach in 2007 and has an impressive 320-200 overall record including 222-142 in GLIAC play.
