TRAVERSE CITY-- This weekend the Ferris State Bulldogs and the Lake Superior State Lakers will play two games, with Saturday being the Superior Ice Showdown at Centre Ice Arena. The game will mark the first time that College Hockey is played in Traverse City.
Ferris comes off of five straight losses, while the Lakers have won their past two. The all-time record between the schools is currently deadlocked at 25 a piece.
We talked to each Coach as they prepare for the weekend.
“Really excited for the opportunity to bring a Division one hockey game down to Traverse City. Obviously, it’s a great hockey town, you know, going from, the many years of hosting Detroit Red wings camp, we’ve got a lot of great Laker alumni that coach down there very involved in the hockey scene.
I think it really started with Tori Lindley, our Athletic Director. He’s from the area, and knew, you know, the great venue there in Traverse City, the great hockey town. It is the great city. It is in the area. And just kind of got him thinking about how we could make this happen. And now here we are just a couple days away, from hosting this event. And we’re excited about it” (Damon Whitten).
Ferris’ Bob Daniels echoed the sentiment.
“Really excited about going to Traverse City for this Game Series Cup. I think that that’s hopefully something it appears like it’s going to be really well received in the Traverse City area by the fans at Lake State, by the fans of Ferris State, by the locals within the Traverse City area.
I don’t know much about the rink, but I think just hearing the guys talk about obviously the Red Wings playing there for their camp or whatever. So it’s exciting. And like I said, we’re happy to grow the game” (Bob Daniels).
Puck drop will be 6:07 P.M. on Saturday.
