SAULT STE. MARIE — The former president of the Sault Area Little League was charged Wednesday with embezzling money over a two-year period.
Current president Derek O’Dell said the investigation centers around suspicious transactions during Matt Hudecek’s time leading the organization.
The Little League board went over all transactions for the last five years and found forged checks from the past two years. They said those transactions were either withdrawals or checks written directly to Hudecek.
O’Dell said the league has now taken a more stringent approach to how money is handled.
“This year, [it’s] definitely more transparent. We are having meetings where our financial aspect comes up right away. We put it out there that we are going to break [it] down so all the families know where the money goes,” said O’Dell.
Hudecek was arraigned in district court Wednesday on one count of embezzlement over $20,000. He was released on personal recognizance bond and will be back in court Dec. 19.
