RUDYARD — Although most students at Rudyard High School aren’t old enough to vote, they got to weigh in on the 2024 races in a mock election.
The district said it’s a tradition they’ve held for several decades. Just under 200 students got to cast their vote during lunch this year.
For the past few weeks, they’ve been learning about the election process in the civics part of their history class.
A few of the 18-year-olds will be able to vote for real for the first time on Nov. 5. One of those students, Madisyn Besteman, is in student government herself.
“I kinda helped set up the mock election because I am on student council, so it’s very interesting see behind the scene and see how that works. And I think it is very important to vote in the real election, and I am excited to because everybody has a voice and it’s important to use that voice if you can,” said Besteman.
The results of the mock election will be announced at an assembly on Friday.
