SAULT STE. MARIE — The 2024 Soo Film Festival begins a week from Wednesday with plenty of movies produced in Michigan.
The festival showcases the work of independent and emerging filmmakers from the Great Lakes region.
One production team is making another reappearance with the showing of their movie “The House on the Lake,” which was filmed between Lansing and Grand Ledge during the pandemic. It was shot with a budget of just under $2,000.
“They came here first as students and now they are professionals. So to see this film as a continuation of that and for it to be a silent film in 2024 is quite a thing. It’s creepy too. It’s a heck of a thing to see,” said Jason Markstrom, festival director.
“Dogman” director Rich Brauer’s “The DJ on Wallaker Hill” will also be featured. It was shot with the help of high school and college students from Traverse City.
This year’s event runs Sept. 11-15 and opens with two days of free showings, Wednesday and Thursday, at the Bayliss Public Library before moving to the historic Soo Theatre from Friday to Sunday.
